Prevalence of Risk Factors of Rectal cancer among 100 Patients Referred to Radiotherapy Department of Emam Reza University Hospital at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences-Tabriz. Iran

Abstract

Background and Objective: Environmental and lifestyle factors are believed to play a large role in the incidence of colorectal cancer which is currently the third most common cancer in the world. In Iran, colorectal cancer has markedly increased over the last several decades. The objective of the present study was to determine epidemiological factors associated and with increased risk of cancer among the Iranian population. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study that was done in radiotherapy department of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. The association between risk factors such as life style, familial history, diabetes and hypertension were studied in 100 consequative patients who were referred to radiotherapy department. The information was processed by statistical methods. Results: This studied population consisted of 30 women and 70 men, mean age of them was 49/3±5.1 years. Low physical activity, low fiber diet, Obesity and smoking were found among 96.9%, 62.2%, 41% and 42% of them respectively diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were also found among 27%, 37% and 27% of these. Conclusion: Dietary fiber has long been thought to be associated with a reduced risk of rectal cancer. Low physical activity and metabolic syndrome including’s obesity, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia are also associated with increased risk of rectal cancer.
