Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between personality dimensions, emotional intelligence and exhaustion in nurses.
Materials and Methods: For this purpose, 250 nurses with more than 5 years job experience chosen by random sampling method. They were examined by personality characteristics questioner of NEO-PIR, Bradbury – Graves`s Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire and Maslach`s Job Burnout Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by Pearson`s Correlation test and multivariate Regression analysis methods.
Results: Result showed that there is significant relationship between personality dimensions and job burnout in nurses, as well as between emotional intelligence and its components. Multivariate regression analysis showed that personality traits and emotional intelligence predict probabity of burnout. Finally, from dimensions of personality, only neuroticism could predict burnout.
Conclusion: these findings suggest that personality and emotional intelligence have important role in job burnout, therefore these psychological factors should be considered in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of nurses with job burnout.
