Abstract

Background and Objectives: Bone scan has an essential role in the practical evaluation of tumors with skeletal metastasis or with bony origin and so application of such techniques can play an important role in the diagnosis of involved regions and also complete treatment of disease. Materials and Methods: In this study 100 referred patients with different confirmed cancers were evaluated after intravenous injection of 99mTc-MDP and performance of Ant & Post whole body bone scan with gamma camera. Results: The scans showed no significant statistical correlation between the signs of diseases and the findings of bone scan(p>0.05), metastatic lesions are multiple and in more than 66% of cases the axial skeleton was involved. The prevalence of skeletal metastases from most common cancers including lung, breast and prostate correlates relatively with other reports. Conclusion: Performing whole body bone scan in addition to the recognition of management protocol prevents from excess actions resulting in worsening of disease. At the present time, scanning with 99mTc-MDP is the most sensitive and economic method in the diagnosis of metastatic regions.
