Abstract
Background and Objectives: ESWL and Ureteroscopy are the principles of treatment of ureteral stones. Since both of the methods have various advantages and their therapeutic affects vary in different parts of ureter in order to choose the method which is the most advantageous to the patient we need to get knowledge about the therapeutic effects of the above mentioned methods in different parts of the ureter. The general purpose in this research is to determine the stone free rate in ureteral stones after lithotripsy with ESWL lithotripter_ lithostar model_ produced by Simens Company.
This study aims to determine: The stone free rate in Ureteral stones. The stone free rate in middle ureter. The stone free rate in lower ureter.
Material and Methods: This research is a study of Cross sectional type, and the population consists of patients with ureteral stones who have referred to the Department of Lithotripsy in Tabriz Imam Khomeini Hospital, medical school for treatment in 20 months from September 1999 to April 2001.
Results: In this method, 72.7 %, 77.8 %, 83.3 % stones free rate for upper, middle and lower ureteral stones after ESWL were achieved thus indicating the high therapeutic effects of this method.
Conclusion: The rates achieved for upper, middle and lower ureteral stones matched with other studies but the rate (percentage) for upper ureteral stones was lower.
