Abstract
Background and Objectives: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by gradual loss of retinal ganglion cells and thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer. It is the second cause of blindness in the developed world. Glaucoma affects nearly 70 million people worldwide, of which nearly half are in Asia.
Materials and Methods: 261 patients with open angle glaucoma participated in this survey and were asked about basic demographic information and their persistence on their medications.
Results: The 12-month persistence and adherence rate among the studied patients were 51% and 66/7% respectively. There was a relation between higher education and adherence and persistence on their medications.
Conclusion: Patient’s compliance and adherence to glaucoma medication regimen could be improved by solving the causes of poor adherence and non-persistence.
