Study of Clinical Signs and Symptoms, Laboratory Tests in Head Trauma in Children

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Trauma is the most common causes of children mortality between 1 to 14 years old that 40% of children mortality is due to head trauma and in boy are twice that in girls. The aim of this study was evaluation prevalence of clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with head trauma in children. Methods and Materials: In a prospective and descriptive – analytical study, admitted patients with head trauma in neurosurgery ward of Imam Hospital were evaluated and necessary information collected from patients documented and evaluated. Results: Fifty nine (68.6%) of patients were boy and 27 (31.4%) of patients were girls and the ratio between boy and girl was 2.18 per 1. Vomiting with 27.9% was the most common clinical finding. Mean age of boy patients was 63.51 ± 44.09 month and mean age of girl patients was 75.74 ± 46.01 month and no significant difference between mean age of boy and girl patients(P=0.243). Mean GCS of boy patients was 13.01 ± 2.95 and mean GCS of girl patients was 11.88 ± 1.71 and no significant difference between mean age of boy and girl patients(P=0.097). Ten of patients (6 boy patients and 4 girl patients) were died as a result of head trauma. No significant difference was found between mortality of head trauma in two sex (P=0.385). Fifty three of patients (6 boy patients and 4 girl patients) have multi trauma. Mean blood glucose of patients with good prognosis was 132.72 ± 58.94 and mean blood glucose of patients with poor prognosis was 217.63 ± 68.50. Mean blood glucose of patients with poor prognosis was significantly higher than patients with good prognosis (P=0.009). Conclusion: Vomiting was the most common clinical finding and mean of blood glucose in patients with poor prognosis was significantly higher than patients with good prognosis.
