Abstract

Background and Objectives: Visual perception plays an important role in construction and development of childhood basic skills. The test of visual perceptual skills (non motor)-revised (TVPS-R) is a useful and popular tool to assess the visual perceptual skills. The purpose of present study was to measure visual perceptual skills in normal school students in the range of 11-13 years in Tehran city. Method: In this descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study, 288 school students (144=girl and 144=boy) were involved. Their age range was from 11 to13. Participants were selected randomly from 5 different areas of Tehran city regarding regional population. To measure visual perceptual skills, TVPS-R was used and the data was categorized in terms of sex groups, 4age groups, 3 educational levels and educational areas. Results: There was no significant difference between sex groups in score of TVPS-R (P>0/05). Mean score of visual perceptual quotient was considerably different between age groups and also educational level (P<0/05); however scores of other variables were not different (P>0/05). Average scores of TVPS-R were not the same for 5 educational areas (P<0/05). Conclusion: This study suggests that visual perceptual skills are affected by cultural and educational issues. On the other hand, regarding the decrease of visual perceptual quotient in higher educational levels and older ages, it is suggested to pay more attention on the effect of educational facilities on the development of visual perceptual skills.
