    <Abstract>Background and Objectives: High prevalence of urogenital infections among women and increasing emergence of antibiotic resistance organisms are a challenging element. It is reasonable to consider the probiotics for combating the urogenital infections. Materials and Methods: In this study, 100 vaginal samples were collected from normal individuals and the presence of lactobacillus acidophilus was verified using biochemical and molecular characterization. the antiviral effect of lactobacillus acidophilus supernatant as a wild type and lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 supernatant, as a standard strain against herpes simplex virus type II were investigated. Results: The supernatant of Lactibacillus acidophilus culture significantly reduced plaque formation by herpes simplex virus II. The same results were obtained for standard strain. The inhibitory effects of each two supernatants were independent of H202 or H+ secretion by candidate lactobacilli. Conclusion: lactobacillus acidophilus is able to inhibit plaque formation by herpes simplex type II, independent from H2O2 and H+ production and it is related to another active bi-products that should be investigate in future studies.</Abstract>
